Elections Nova Scotia Presents 2021-2022 Budget Estimate to the Special Committee of the House of Assembly

Elections Nova Scotia – Chief Electoral Officer, Richard Temporale, has released budget estimates for Elections Nova Scotia (ENS) of $4.884 million for the 2021-2022 fiscal year as presented to the Special Committee of the House of Assembly on January 12, 2021.
The budget estimates include funding for ENS’s administrative requirements, one by-election, external legal counsel, service delivery to achieve the ENS mandate, election readiness funding to meet two additional election readiness dates, and costs related to further preparations to deliver an election under pandemic circumstances.
The Special Committee reviewed ENS’s budget estimates and recommended them without alteration to Treasury and Policy Board to be included in the 2021-2022 provincial budget.
“As one of the four independent offices of the House of Assembly, Elections Nova Scotia is charged with upholding Government accountability,” said Dorothy Rice, Chief Financial Officer for Elections Nova Scotia. “Just as Elections Nova Scotia presents our budget estimates to the Special Committee of the House of Assembly, nine of the 13 other election management bodies in this county do the same.”

This budget submission follows the release last week of an election readiness update report on ENS’s plans for the 41st provincial general election. That report outlined challenges over the past two years including a year’s delay in funding, a global pandemic, and legislative uncertainty.
ENS is an independent non-partisan agency that reports to the members of the House of Assembly through the Speaker. Its mandate is to deliver provincial elections impartially and professionally.
